Obstetric Care

The Birth Center

Having a baby is one of the most exciting and rewarding times in a woman's life, and Merit Health Wesley is dedicated to providing expectant mothers and newborns with quality care during this special time. The maternity services are provided by obstetricians, labor and delivery specialists, nurses and other caring professionals in a welcoming, comfortable environment.

The Birth Center at Merit Health Wesley features labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum (LDRP) suites designed to allow a birthing mother to stay in one room or her birthing care. The LDRP suites are large, private rooms that also provide accommodations for fathers and additional space for visiting family members and friends. This family-centered approach to care allows for ample bonding time. We encourage mother-baby care, and the LDRP suites allow parents to keep their newborns with them in the privacy of their birthing suite.

At Merit Health Wesley, we believe in the "Golden Hour"– a bonding time for you and your baby that is a once-in-a-lifetime event and needs to be celebrated. It can help calm the baby, build up resistance to infection, and gets breastfeeding off to a good start. It is time for introductions to mommy and daddy and first “oohs and ahs,” and checking out hair and eye color. It is important for you to have this time with your baby to begin the bonding process. After the first hour with your newborn, we encourage you to invite family and friends in to meet your new arrival.

Studies show that the mother-child bond is critical for your baby's ongoing growth and development. We are promoting skin-to-skin in the first hours and days of your baby's life to help the two of you get to know each other. This closeness is one of the best ways for you to learn about your baby and begin the important process of bonding and connecting with your newborn.

Baby-Friendly Hospital

Merit Health Wesley has been designated by Baby-Friendly® USA (BFUSA) as a baby-friendly hospital. This designation means mothers receive information that helps them make the best decisions for infant feeding and supports them in achieving personal feeding goals. Focus is placed on mother-baby bonding through skin-to-skin contact, rooming in and providing instructions to help mothers recognize early feeding cues for their babies.

Neonatal Intensive Care

When a newborn needs special care, we are here to provide round-the-clock care for sick or premature infants. If a newborn intensive care unit (NICU) admission is anticipated, parents and family will be offered the opportunity to meet with NICU staff to discuss the individualized care for your infant.

The Level III NICU houses specialized equipment and developmental processes designed to provide care for premature babies. The space is conducive to facilitating the care given to some of our smallest premature babies.
